Blog-This! Blog-That! It's everywhere...
So, here comes "Salutogenesis" - The blog on creating health in a pro-active way
It took me a while to decide upon creating this blog.
For an old fashion guy like me, this type of "eccentric" writing is frightening. But the young and enterpreneur spirit of mine wouldn't let it go without establishing this blog as part of my identity.
So, here I'm am, starting this blog with an "opening ceremony".
Salutogenesis is a concept created by my late professor for medical sociology, Aaron Antonovsky (Health, stress, and coping: New perspectives on mental and physical well-being. San Francisco. Jossey-Bass. 1979) to express his new approach for health promotion and assessment. It is basically derived from the words "salus" (health, in Latin) and "genesis" (give birth, in Latin).
Cowley and Billings wrote that salutogenesis literally means 'that which gives birth to health'.
Salutogensis "examines the creation of wellbeing by looking at successful coping strategies and health". By doing so, it opposed to the pathogenic perspective of traditional public health and communitiy medicine, which usually focus on the particular diagnosed disease entity, that often also dominates the chosen intervention. But by using the salutogenic perspective, we emphasized the importance of starting from a consideration of how health is created and maintained.
Antonovsky advocates that "people do not exist in a vacum". We simply cannot have a concept of the individual without a social or historical perspective. We cannot seek a cure in isolation of all factors which affect our health and which are often non-biological in nature. Instead, we should try to understand and deal with all factors that create disorder in our life. Then we should seek out those forces which promote order in our life- the family, the wider community in which we live.
Therefore, salutogenesis focuses on health and how to promote it, not illness and how to cure it. Health is regarded as an ongoing process that is "negotiated by people throughout their lifetimes. Some are good negotiators, others bad. It is a process intertwined with and shaped by socio-cultural factors of the individual, their family, and their community".
Our health depends on our ability to cope and our supporting network of resources (for times of need). This network asts as, "buffering, ameliorating or mediating mechanisms, thought of as blunting the invariably negative impact of stressors and thus preventing breakdown".
These resources can be divided into internal resources (such as, self-esteem or cognitive ability to learn how to cope with stressors) or external resources (such as, the local environment or community and cultural influences), and we accumulate or lose them through our lifetime events and experiences.
In Summary, my "salutogensis" blog will deal with different resources for our salutogenesis process, and their scientific background and evidence. The main focus of this blog will be on issues that are in my fields of expertise, which are- Nutritional and Exercise - Physiology, Training & Rehabilitation. However, I welcome any comments, suggestions and contributions to this blog.
